IP Livestreaming
About the Project
With the idea of bringing live images from organic farms and regional producers into sales rooms to provide customers with full transparency about animal husbandry conditions, we developed a compact livestreaming system together with our technology partners. The first pilot store at Rewe Richrath was very popular. This solution, known as “Tierwohl-TV” (Animal Welfare TV), is now in use nationwide in numerous stores. In addition to Tierwohl-TV, we have also introduced the IP livestreaming concept as a standalone VTIS solution at other retailers.
Implementation
IP cameras are installed on-site in the barn or outdoor area. Data transmission occurs either via an existing network infrastructure or via LTE routers. Additionally, so-called kill switches are installed, which can interrupt or switch the live broadcast, for example, during feeding. This protects the personal and data protection rights of employees on site. Simultaneously, the livestream is set up and the cameras are integrated. The live images are displayed on-site in the store via a digital signage solution. Subsequently, start and end times for the stream are set, adapted to the store’s opening hours. In addition, the VTIS monitoring system can automatically monitor the operation of all network components and, in the event of a malfunction, forward an automatic notification to a responsible person. This ensures long-term, trouble-free operation of the entire system.
RELIABLE PERFORMANCE IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS
The Challenge
Today’s customer wants to consume environmentally consciously and is willing to pay an appropriate price for it. In return, they demand quality and complete transparency. Often, simple organic labels are no longer sufficient. Images, however, say more than 1000 words, and live images provide verifiable proof of husbandry conditions. The underlying idea and challenge of this project was therefore to offer the customer 100% transparency. When purchasing animal products, the customer should be able to see live under what conditions the animals are kept. The technical challenge was to build a lean and simple livestreaming system that can reliably deliver high-quality live images in remote areas, despite poor or non-existent network infrastructure.
