In recent years, network technology has significantly expanded the range of applications for video surveillance systems. New areas of use include, for example, marketing for retail, process control and monitoring for industry and logistics, as well as numerous AI functions for a wide range of sectors.

What does a professional video surveillance system consist of?

A professional video surveillance system is always efficient. This applies both to the infrastructure (bandwidth, switches, installed cables, masts, etc.) and to the number of cameras used. These must be proportionate to the requirements and surveillance objectives. Professional video surveillance therefore does not mean a large number of expensive cameras, but is always precisely tailored to the requirements. A common approach used by some video surveillance providers is to deploy expensive hardware and software where more affordable options would be completely sufficient.

Analog surveillance cameras

Surveillance cameras, network components, and basically all parts of a video surveillance system are subject to heavy use. Continuous operation places particular demands on hardware and leads to wear and tear. That’s why it’s important that a video system;

IP surveillance cameras / network cameras

An IP surveillance camera differs from an analog surveillance camera in one key way: it is based on network technology and transmits the digital video signal via network cables (e.g., patch or LAN cables).

A possible disadvantage compared to analog systems is a slight delay in the video stream. With modern systems, however, this is usually very small (often under one second on the local network) and is hardly relevant in practice.

Server

A server is the central element of a modern video surveillance system and handles the processing, storage, and management of all video data. In IP-based video surveillance systems, this typically involves a powerful computer running VMS software (Video Management System) that detects and controls all surveillance cameras on the network.

Reliable operation of a video surveillance system requires sufficient system resources, especially CPU performance and RAM. For advanced functions such as video analytics or AI evaluation, additional hardware acceleration can also be useful.

From a medium system size of around 15 to 20 cameras, the use of dedicated server hardware is recommended. It is designed for 24/7 continuous operation and offers flexible storage solutions with multiple drive bays. Modern server solutions also make video surveillance systems scalable and fail-safe, as they can be expanded at any time and operated redundantly if required.

Switches

For a video surveillance system to work reliably, a stable network infrastructure is required. Switches play a central role in this.

A switch connects all components of the video surveillance system and ensures smooth transmission of video data between cameras, the server, and other network devices.

In modern video surveillance systems, PoE switches are often used. They supply the cameras with both data and power via a single network cable, reducing installation effort.

For larger video surveillance systems, make sure there is sufficient bandwidth and enough ports so that all camera streams can be transmitted reliably.

Storage media and storage systems

If a video surveillance system is to not only display live images but also record video data, a suitable storage solution is required. In most cases, storage is centralized on a server or a network video recorder (NVR) that consolidates and archives all camera streams.

For larger video surveillance systems with high data volumes, additional storage systems can be integrated. This allows storage capacity to be expanded flexibly and adapted to the respective system size.

Some surveillance cameras also offer the option to store video data directly on internal SD cards. This solution is primarily suitable for smaller video surveillance systems or private use, as managing and backing up data quickly becomes time-consuming with many cameras.

Data privacy and data security in video surveillance systems

The retention period within a video surveillance system depends on individual requirements and applicable data protection regulations. Under the General Data Protection Regulation, personal data may only be stored for as long as necessary for the respective purpose. In practice, this often means a retention period of 48 to 72 hours, unless specific security-related reasons justify longer storage.

For GDPR-compliant use of a video surveillance system, it is also crucial that access to recordings is clearly regulated and restricted to authorized persons. In addition, appropriate measures such as access controls, logging, and encrypted data transmissions should be used.

How much does a video surveillance system cost?

The cost of a video surveillance system depends heavily on individual requirements and system size. Simple systems for private use start at around 200 to 400 euros and typically include up to four cameras, including a network video recorder.

For commercial use, professional video surveillance systems usually start in the range of several thousand euros. Depending on scope, quality requirements, and number of cameras, costs can quickly reach five figures and, for large projects—such as logistics centers with several hundred cameras—can exceed 100,000 euros.

Where can I buy a video surveillance system?

Private users can easily purchase video surveillance systems from electronics retailers or major online shops. These systems are generally designed for typical private-use requirements, such as Wi-Fi cameras with night vision and integrated storage or a network video recorder.

For commercial use, however, working with a specialist company is recommended. A professional video surveillance system must operate reliably and fail-safe over the long term, as recordings can play an important role as evidence in an emergency—for example, in cases of theft or vandalism.

Complex systems: As the number of cameras increases, the complexity of the entire video surveillance system also grows. Planning, installation, and configuration therefore require technical expertise to optimally coordinate all components and ensure secure operation.
